James Baldwin once wrote, "Perhaps home is not a place but simply an irrevocable condition." Whether we care to admit it or not we're all molded, in varying degrees, by who and where we come from. Sometimes we wear it as a symbol of pride, but at other times those imprints can be more painful. Artists have long mined the deeply personal for creative inspiration, often not being able to help but pour every part of themselves into their work and use it as a cathartic way of expressing their innermost feelings.
This month's newsletter highlights some of the most personal work that WePresent has produced this year, from the debut film by Little Simz exploring past trauma, to photographer Quil Lemons' portrayal of Black love and the city that raised him. To end on another quote from the great Baldwin: "All art is a kind of confession, more or less oblique." Holly Fraser, Editor-in-chief, WePresentIllustration by Dror Cohen |
